Writing
Leading a state financial aid association during the time of COVID-19 requires the utilization of message board and blog posts to stay in contact with the association members and keep them engaged.
President's Ponderings
Traditionally the President gives a speech after their installation at the annual conference. Due to our conference being cancelled, I delivered this speech via the association's message board.
As 2020 Comes to a Close
By December 2020, I was 8 months into my Presidency. This message board post served as a way to let the association know they were on my mind and remind them that we get through the tough times together.
Dj Goes to DC
As President-Elect the association paid for me to attend our national association's leadership conference. One task that is expected in return is a blog post about the trip. I chose to feature my DC experiences in my post.
Volunteers Needed
Our association runs solely on volunteer power. This is a blog post I created to inform members of the opportunities available and call them to action.
Planning
My involvement in our state financial aid association has provided many opportunities for varying degrees of planning; from planning and executing an awards ceremony to developing a strategic long-range plan. These are just a few examples of work I've done.
Professional Development Training
As part of the inaugural PDT task force, I had a hand in almost all the planning and coordination for five one-day trainings to be held across the state. To build excitement around this new initiative I sent out teasers through our list-serv that contained only images and encouraged members to guess the topics and locations.
Once everything was announced I combined it on one graphic which our Association News team then featured on the blog.
Planning a Conference
At the same time that I was working on PDT, I was also responsible for co-chairing Conference Planning in my role as Vice President. A large part of this was developing the program for the two and one-half day conference. I developed a schedule, identified session topics, secured presenters and moderators, assigned rooms and time slots for each session, determine room sets, and obtained needed technology for each room. I also developed this conference program for attendees to reference and worked with the hotel on our BEO.
Developing a Long Range Plan
During my year as President, our board was tasked with creating a new strategic long range plan for 2021-2024. For this project, I solicited suggestions from the membership and Board of Directors. I utilized these suggestions as well as my own ideas to draft the plan. I presented it to the board, made a few edits, and then it was approved by the Board of Directors.
Job Aids
I have taken the opportunity to create many job aids in my day-to-day in our office. These usually stem from questions that are asked frequently or information we are giving out regularly.
How to Financial Aid at ESU
The US Department of Education stopped providing printed material so we no longer have information to hand out at tabling events. This coupled by the fact that parents want us to hand them something that tells them what their student needs to do, led me to create this tri-fold brochure.
Alternative Financing Options
Student financial aid offers provide information on additional financing options, should the student need it. These options are shared on our website, however it is buried and difficult to find if you don't know where to look. We often get questions about what Alternative Financing Options means, so I created this document with simplified wording to provide to students and parents.
Impact of Withdrawing
Around midterms each semester, we have many students and advisors contact us about how their financial aid will be impacted if they withdraw from a class. I provided this flow chart for advisors to use with their students. Our student workers also utilize it when assisting students.
