Case Studies

Corky's Wallet

In early 2018, I was notified that the company who was providing the financial literacy tools our office was utilizing would no longer offer that service. Upon researching other options, I discovered that they were either priced far outside our budget, did not offer the content I was looking for, or was not in a platform that seemed user friendly to our students. Utilizing the skills I obtained while pursuing a Master's degree in Instructional Design & Technology, I designed, developed, and implemented a self-directed financial literacy course in the school's Canvas LMS.

During this project, I coordinated with our IT department to obtain the course shell and to have all students auto-enrolled in the course when they enroll at ESU. I also collaborated with ESU Marketing & Media Relations to design the logos I wanted for the course. Click the logo to the right for more information.

FAFSA Completion Events

Prior to 2018, ESU Financial Aid staff visited area high schools to provide a "Financial Aid Night." This generally consisted of a 45-60 minute presentation that provided a lot of detail about the FAFSA and financial aid.

Combining the fact that we were seeing low turnout at these events with the fact that high school counselors were frequently calling with questions about how to fill out the FAFSA with their students; I proposed that we move away from these arduous presentations and instead offer FAFSA Completion events at these same high schools. #30days2FAFSA

In 2016, a change to the FAFSA timeline went in to effect resulting in the application opening on October 1st for the upcoming school year, instead of January 1st. The change meant that prior-prior year tax and income information would now be used instead of prior year information; so there were two years where 2015 tax data was to be used. Therefore in 2017, it was crucial that students knew they were to use 2016 tax information. As a result, I spearheaded a #30days2FAFSA communication campaign.
